By now, we’re pretty sure every single hooper across the world has heard of Victor Wembanyama. And you’ve undoubtedly heard, he’s hailed by some as the best prospect in NBA history. And if you ask Woj, he may be the greatest prospect in not just basketball, but all of team sports.

Victor Wembanyama, drafted 1st overall by the San Antonio Spurs measures at 7-4 and has an 8-foot wingspan. His size alone is probably enough for him to have earned a top pick in the draft, but there’s much more to this man than meets the eye.

For someone that height, Victor possesses the kinesthetic ability to move his body as if he were a foot shorter. Combined with his guard-like skills, shooting ability, and his insane flexibility, he’s a major threat on both offense and defense.

From his pre-season game, we saw flashes of Victor’s greatness already. In San Antonio’s game against Golden State, for example, we saw him being able to block Klay’s 3-point jumper, pick up the ball, run full court, and finish with a classy euro-step. Great defense translates into great offense, and Victor just proves this flawlessly.

Another great advantage his size and flexibility provide is that even if he does make a mistake on the defensive end, he’s able to easily recover and contest or block a shot. What’s more is that his first step is much quicker than you would assume, and he can effectively guard both the perimeter and the painted area by taking a single step.

So, now that the regular season has officially started, how did Wemby do in his debut?

Victor Wembanyama debuted in a matchup against the Dallas Mavericks on the 26th of October, 2023.

The rookie went for 15 points, (6-9 FG) (3-5 3PT), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block, in a little over 23 minutes of play.

In just the first minute of play, he made his first block, and shortly after hit a three for his first made field goal in the league. Unfortunately, 6 of his points came in the first three quarters of play, as he was slowed down by foul trouble and his teammates missed him open in transition plays.

However, despite him being in foul trouble, Victor did come out about halfway through the fourth quarter to score the rest of his points, whilst also firing up the crowd with a thunderous alley-oop dunk.

The San Antonio Spurs ended up losing to the Dallas Mavericks 126-119, but you have to keep in mind that a certain Luka Doncic went for a 33-point triple-double in his own debut of this season.

While some definitely expected more from Victor in his first official NBA game, he showed glimpses of potential dominance already. In a post-game interview, when asked how he thinks his debut went, he said: “Lots of emotions of course, but it would have been perfect with a win”

With this mentality, we’re certain that Victor will end up becoming an NBA all-time great, and we can’t wait for his next game.
